A Portrait

“What we are really looking for when we  take portraits is a connection.  We are looking for an expression, a mood, a certain something that reveals the spirit of the person we are photographing.  We are watching and waiting for something to happen.  Something real.  Like hunters, we are stalking beauty.  We are looking for aliveness.  We are waiting for a spark.”  (Expressive Photography)

I love this quote from one of my favorite photography books, Expressive Photography.  That is exactly how I felt the day that I took this picture.  It was our last day on the beach and I had been taking pictures all day long but I still felt like I hadn’t gotten “that picture”.  The sun was starting to set as I was packing up the beach stuff.  I looked over to see one of my little guys staring down the beach at the setting sun.  I dropped  what I was holding and laid down on the beach to capture this picture.  I captured it.

Something real.

Something alive.

A spark.

A portrait.
